PERCY NOOK
2mm/N  Scale, Owner -  Chris  Shaw

Picture
My layout depicts a small local station on the secondary east coast line between Sunderland and Newcastle in the North East of England. The inspiration for the model was taken from a real location at Felling although it is not depicted faithfully. The conurbation that is Tyneside extends from the coast well inland and along the coast either side of both these cities. The flavour is dense housing mixed with an industrial landscape, typical of the 1950’s and 60’s. I hope to be able to show what the area looked like and how the railway operated during this period.

The name “Percy Nook” was derived from the ancient Percy family well established in the history of the area along with the Nook part taken from Windy Nook which is just up the hill from Felling. The layout was built as a competitor in the 2mm Scale Association’s 50th anniversary layout challenge which took place in 2010 and I was happy to be judged runner-up for my efforts.

Building a model railway is a long process and this is by no means finished, I have steam locomotives under construction but none are ready yet for  operation. We rely on diesel engines which have been converted to fine scale quite simply and DCC chips added. I hope you agree that the track and wheels standards used add to the realism of the scene. I think this layout shows how easy it is to progress to a fine scale standard and I encourage everyone to try it.

Building the layout took just under two years and this was helped by utilising Metcalfe and Scalescenes kits along with proprietary rolling stock converted to scale. As time allows more scratch built items will be introduced and etched kits produced by the 2mm Scale Association will be added. I am looking forward continuing with this layout and its stock and will derive much pleasure from the process. I hope you enjoy the show and I would be delighted to think that my efforts have inspired you to have a go. Please feel free to ask questions and I have some leaflets about the association if you are interested.
