Hazlebury Yard is loosely based on the 'Hump Shunting' yards in use on the railways in the late 1940's and early 1950's. They were used for sorting wagons to be sent to different destinations and to cut down on shunting time and movements. They went out of use when most wagons became air-braked and 'block' trains became the usual freight movement. Block trains are trains of the same sort of wagon coming from one customer and all going to one destination.
